Objective

The objective of the Family Leadership Institute is to teach parents and caregivers the art and skills of family leadership in support of academic achievement and life success for their children by using a practical ten-step approach.

Overview

The Family Leadership Institute (FLI) is a multifaceted educational curriculum focused on providing families with the knowledge, tools and inspiration to help their children succeed in school and in life.  Originally designed as a cultural-specific program for parents of first- and second-generation children, the FLI program has evolved into a curriculum that helps families of diverse ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds grow as individuals, parents and leaders.

Through a series of ten modules, parents are provided the skills, abilities and attitudes necessary to enhance their effectiveness as role models for their children.  During the FLI program parents are encouraged to become engaged in their children's education in an effort to achieve academic success.

The FLI workshops are conducted in both English and Spanish.  Each workshop contains a series of lectures, participant discussions, story telling, role-playing, group and individual activities.

Goals

  • Increase engagement of families in their children's education.

  • Provide purpose, tools and direction to parents and their children to achieve academic success as well as life success.

  • Produce a cadre of knowledge and committed parents & caregivers who actively support school/community efforts that benefit their children in addition to encouraging other families to do the same.

Program Features

  • Workshops are taught in Spanish and English by experienced bilingual facilitators who share the immigrant/migrant experience.

  • Modules can be tailored to the specific needs of individual schools and school districts.

  • Incorporates community resource speakers to inform participants of types of assistance available locally to aid families in supporting the success of their children.

  • FLI program can be coupled with existing and/or specifically designed English-as-a-Second Language/adult literacy programs.

Testimonials

"I wanted to tell you that since I began to attend the FLI workshops my life took a more positive turn. My family is more open and relaxed, my sons grades got better. Every day issues are now taken care effectively and practically, with a vision of more positive results. I am planning to go to college.

I also realized that I have more to offer to my family and my community. I am more involved in my son's school and want to be a role model for my family and others. The Family Leadership Institute Workshops prepared me to understand the schools system and showed me how to integrate myself to it  more effectively. Many of us usually leave all the work to the teachers and the school  to do, without realizing that we as parents have a role in it too. I learned in these workshops that we need to be more proactive within our schools because that helps  kids more. In my case I can say it works. It shows in my son's grades. I also recognized the teacher's efforts because they are usually unappreciated. But if we all work together we can make it work.

The Family Leadership Institute workshops should be expanded all over the world. In my opinion, something as good as this should be shared with others. It empowers, it liberates, it gives you the tools to understand and to take positive action. I thank  the Family Leadership Institute and its leaders, especially Consuelo Castillo Kickbush  for finding a way to motivate and help me find within myself what I needed to move on and make things happen for me. I also want to thank her organization for this great opportunity to help me  make my life better. 'I am preparing today to be tomorrow's leader. Thank You."  -Wanda Ramos,Orlando,FL

"I learned that as a leader, I must have a vision and need to formulate a vision for my family.  I remind my children everyday the importance of an education and we must take advantage of the opportunities this country provides." -Virginia Alvarez, Houston, TX

"This is a program that I think is very good because one learns a lot on how to talk to your children, give them advice and exchange experiences." -Rigoberto Alvarez, Las Vegas, NV

"It caught my attention because I didn't have much communication with my husband and now we talk more and we have a better relationship with our daughter who also has changed positively in her way of being and now has better grades." -Margarita Alvarez, Las Vegas, NV
